Agamemnon's palace at Ancient Mycenae is well worth the short detour even if you drive in one hop- the museum displays a wealth of artifacts found here and the huge Lion’s Gate ( the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe) is breathtaking. It’s interesting to know that Homer’s epic stories The Iliad and The Odyssey with their accounts of the ancient kings and the the Trojan War would have remained completely in the realm of myth if Heinrich Schliemann had not excavated the site in 1876.
Argos is excellent for an overnight stop if you’re not in a hurry it’s a beautiful town and site of the the earliest town in Europe. The friendly Hotel Morfeas has rooms ( see 'getting here' ) right on the square – lined with citrus trees restaurants and cafes.
