Grocery shops, the bakery, cafes and tavernas are within a couple of minutes walk and you'll find the locals friendly and helpful. For those who've previously holidayed on the islands you won't believe the contrasts in the peaceful, unspoilt nature of this area, the quality of the local cuisine and the significantly lower prices. Methoni truly is the ' Real Greece'
The beach is all sand and is very safe for children as the water deepens very slowly and there are no rocks. It's close enough to go for several dips a day. In the morning take a stroll past the bakery (the smell of fresh bread is irresistible) and grab a pastry. Your route is straight down the historic main street between the end of our little lane and the castle so you can collect a coffee from Niko's and paper at the Newsagent opposite and have breakfast on the beach with the clear waters of the Ionian Sea lapping at your toes.
For an evening stroll you might walk up the lane behind the villa to the cliff tops where the sun sets over the sea. There's a small restaurant towards the castle where you can relax with a drink and take in the views. Untouched by development, Methoni is friendly and traditional; you'll soon feel like a local.

There are regular buses from the stop just around the corner for trips to Pylos or further afield and boat trips to the island of Sapienza. The peninsula is great for cycling and if you do wish to hire a car the sites and museums of ancient Olympia, Messini and Nestor's palace are a must, as well as stunning Voidokilia beach - one of the best in Europe. |
